Ghanaian goalkeeper Richard Ofori has publicly apologized to the Ghanaian people for the disappointing performance of the Black Stars at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament held in Ivory Coast.
Despite being an experienced shot-stopper and a part of the Ghana squad during the competition, Ofori faced criticism for a series of mistakes in all three matches. The culmination came in the final minutes of the last group game against Mozambique, where an error on Ofori's part led to a goal that ultimately resulted in Ghana's exit from the tournament.
A week after the crucial match, Ofori expressed regret and extended his sincere apologies to the people of Ghana. He acknowledged the collective shortcomings of the team and emphasized the players' commitment to giving their best.
"To the wonderful people of Ghana, I humbly extend my heartfelt apologies for our team's performance at AFCON. As a collective, we fell short. We gave our all in previous games, and it pains me that we couldn't achieve the desired result in the end," said Richard Ofori.
The goalkeeper went on to express gratitude for the unwavering support from the Ghanaian fans, assuring them of the team's dedication to learning from the experience. Ofori promised that they would work harder, address their mistakes, and strive for better outcomes in future competitions.
“I want to express our gratitude for your unwavering support and reassure you that we love God and are committed to learning from this experience. We promise to work harder, address our mistakes, and strive for a better outcome in the future. Your understanding means the world to us.”
Despite the apology, there have been calls from some Ghanaians for Richard Ofori's retirement from the Black Stars.
