The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has bemoaned that he cannot promise to construct a new stadium in the midst of the current economic challenges in Ghana.

Currently, Ghana does not have a world-class Category A stadium, as the five major edifices in the country cannot host FIFA and CAF approved games due to their dilapidated state.

The Borteyman Sports Complex and the University of Ghana Stadium, both developed for the 2023 African Games, are the only facilities currently in a decent and satisfactory condition to host notable multi-sport events.

Mr Mahama was responding to a question during Sunday night press interaction at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra.

He blatantly made it clear that building a stadium would not be a priority for his government, saying: “In the current crisis in which we are, I would not stand here and promise that we will build a new stadium.

“But I’ve said that under the big push, we intend to spend a certain amount of money over five years on providing a good infrastructure to include roads, bridges, agro-industrial parks, and so on and so forth.

“That could include sports facilities. And if we make an allocation, then we probably would look at providing such a stadium,” he added.
