Former President and flag-bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has honestly refused to promise building a new stadium when voted into power once again as he feels the country's is currently in serious financial crisis.

The 65-year-old made these comments during his 'Meet the Press' last Sunday night, July 7, where he engaged the Ghanaian media to address certain national issues and also carry out the NDC's campaign message to all Ghanaians.

Varieties of journalists in the country were present to issue their queries to the veteran politician in an event which was aired live nationwide on both traditional and new media.

Renowned sports journalist Saddick Adam was also in attendance and asked whether the NDC can provide an ultra modern national football stadium since the country is currently lacking such a facility with the once already available dilapidated and doesn't meet the FIFA standard.

Responding to this question, the former ECOWAS Chairman reiterated that, he can't promise anything at the moment since the country is in critical financial crises but it's something they will definitely pay heed to in future when they are handed power in the upcoming elections.

"In the current crisis in which we are, I would not stand here and promise that we will build a new stadium,” he said. “But I’ve said that under the big push, we intend to spend a certain amount of money over five years on providing good infrastructure to include roads, bridges, agro-industrial parks, and so on and so forth. That could include sports facilities. And if we make allocation, then we probably would look at providing such a stadium,” he concluded.

Ghana's two-party system means John Dramani Mahama will cross swords with NPP's Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the big seat in the upcoming General Elections, slated for December 7, 2024.
