Former Black Stars winger Laryea Kingston believes that Otto Addo's tactical approach might be preventing the Black Stars from playing the kind of attacking, expressive football their talent warrants.
According to Kingston, the team has the quality to dominate games from the start but is not fully utilizing its attacking potential.
The Black Stars are set to face Sudan in the second leg of their 2025 AFCON qualifiers on Tuesday, following a goalless draw at the Accra Sports Stadium last Thursday. Kingston emphasized the importance of starting on the front foot and taking advantage of the players at Addo's disposal.
“So approaching this game, go all out; you have the players. When you look at the Black Stars' front line, everyone has what it takes to go out there and punish every defender,” Kingston told Joy Sports.
He highlighted the form of several key players like Antoine Semenyo, Jordan Ayew, Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, and Mohammed Kudus, all of whom are performing well at their respective clubs in Europe. “We have players that can attack opponents effectively,” he added.
Kingston also suggested that the current game plan may not be allowing these players to fully express themselves, particularly in the final third. "Maybe our game plan is not allowing them to express themselves more when they get to the open box, especially if you look at the chances we had in the later part of the game," he said.
The goalless draw leaves Sudan with four points in Group F, two points ahead of Ghana, who are now in third place and at risk of failing to qualify for the AFCON for the first time in 20 years.
