A late goal by Kamaradini Mamudu ensured the Ghanaian champions would pick their first victory of the competition. Abdelraouf Benguit gave the visitors the lead after Talal Boussouf was fouled in the Medeama penalty area.
Medeama's pulled parity when a Kamaradini Mamudu's freekick was heavily deflected in by Daniel Lomotey, but Medeama still deserved the win.
Below are three things we learned from the game at the Baba Yara Sports stadium.
Medeama resilience rewarded in comeback win
Medeama may have been low on confidence pre-game following Saturday’s 3-0 away defeat by Al Ahly, a feeling which would only have been exacerbated when Chelsea went 1-0 ahead here. Yet the Mauve and Yellows deserve great credit for remaining patient and playing their way back into the match.
The Ghanaian champions were a little wasteful in front of goal in the second half, with Nana Kofi Babil and Derrick Fordjourboth guilty of firing shots too close to Alexes Guendouz. There was little wrong with their approach play, though, and they were eventually rewarded for their constant probing.
Johnathan Sowah is a big miss for Medeama
Many have questioned the striker's importance, but the fact of the matter is that the Medeama are not the same team without him.
The Black Stars forward brings pace and power from a deep position, and his willingness to take the ball under pressure, and move through the lines, is something that the Mauves and Yellows undoubtedly miss. Daniel Lomotey is a fine footballer, but he is not Sowah.
Derrick Fordjour's presence in attacking midfield allows for his partner to drive forward, and that is where Sowah shines. There was not too much of a relationship between Medeama's midfield and forward line on Friday, and it was another example of just what the team is when Sowah does not feature.
Ourega the brightest player on the day
Calm, assured and a leader. Three words you wouldn’t normally find yourself writing about Jean Vital Ourega, but on Friday he was all three and more. The talent has always been there for him but so often in big games it has been his mind which lets him down. Not this afternoon though as he put in one of the best displays of his career in the Medeama's victory over the Algerian counterparts.
Classy on the ball and a terrier in defence, the crowd rose to a stunning display from the young man in the middle of the park. He provided a remainder that he is a real weapon in Adotey's armoury when he outplayed the Belouizdad midfield.
