Former Ghana international Samuel Kuffuor has thrown his support behind compatriot Michael Essien, expressing confidence that the ex-Chelsea midfielder can build a successful coaching career at the highest level.

Kuffuor’s remarks come amid the impressive rise of Vincent Kompany, who has made history at Bayern Munich by becoming one of the most prominent Black coaches in European football and leading the club to domestic success and a strong Champions League run.

According to Kuffuor, Kompany’s achievements are opening doors for aspiring Black coaches worldwide—and Essien is well-positioned to take advantage.

“Vincent Kompany is one of the top young coaches. He has opened so many doors, and he's young,” Kuffuor said. “It’s probably an opportunity for Michael Essien, who is now into coaching, to have the opportunity. The door is wide open for the Black coaches.”

Essien, a UEFA Champions League winner and one of Ghana’s most decorated players, has been steadily building his coaching profile. He has earned his UEFA licences and gained experience in roles including assistant coach at FC Nordsjælland, while also working within the Ghana national team setup.

Kuffuor believes the former midfielder has the intelligence, leadership, and tactical understanding required to succeed in management, pointing to Kompany’s journey as proof that persistence can pay off.

“Kompany has shown that Black coaches can lead the biggest clubs in the world,” he added. “Michael Essien has the same potential. He just needs the right opportunity and belief.”

As conversations around diversity in coaching continue, Kuffuor’s endorsement highlights growing belief in Essien’s potential—and reinforces the idea that a new generation of African coaches is ready to emerge on the global stage.
