Former Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton has praised his successor Otto Addo, describing him as a “very good coach” following Ghana’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Addo came under intense criticism after Ghana’s failure to reach the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, which is the first time in more than two decades the four-time African champions missed out on the continental showpiece.
However, the German-trained tactician redeemed himself by guiding the Black Stars to secure a place at next summer’s World Cup, to be staged in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The achievement makes Addo the first coach in Ghana’s history to qualify the national team for back-to-back World Cups.
Speaking to 3Sports, Hughton – who managed Ghana during the 2023 AFCON and previously worked with Addo as a technical advisor – commended his former colleague for his accomplishments.
“Otto Addo is a very good coach. He has now taken the team to two World Cups, not something many coaches do,” said the former Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle United manager.
“He is a good coach. As an individual, I like him a lot,” Hughton added.
The Black Stars will discover their 2026 World Cup group-stage opponents on December 5, as preparations begin for their seventh appearance at the global showpiece.
