Black Stars coach Otto Addo has shed light on the tactical plan Ghana will deploy in their international friendly against South Korea, with much of the focus centred on how to manage the threat posed by captain Son Heung-min.
Addo, who worked with the Tottenham Hotspur forward during their time together at Hamburg, reflected warmly on Son’s development and impact.
“He’s a very good player. He always goes both ways; he also helped us to win a lot of games back then,” Addo said. “The first days were very difficult… but later, he did a great job for us in Hamburg.”
Asked how his team intends to stop South Korea’s talisman, Addo was clear about the defensive discipline required.
“He’s good on the ball, he shoots left and right. We have to prevent and stop his shots, which are very, very crucial,” he explained. “He has good runs, we have to make good decisions, especially in our defence, when to attack him, but also when to drop in case there’s space.”
The Ghana gaffer also emphasised the need to avoid unnecessary set-pieces, aware of Son’s threat from dead-ball situations.
“In case we lose the ball, we are not open to conceding a goal. Surely, we have to avoid set pieces, especially around the box,” he noted.
Ghana take on South Korea today (Tuesday) at the Seoul World Cup Stadium, with the match starting at 11 am, as the Black Stars continue preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
