Former Ghana head coach, Charles Kwablan Akonnor, has stated that a lot of things happened during his tenure as gaffer of the four-time African champions, revealing that leadership of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) influenced national team call-ups.
The 48-year-old was sacked in September, 2021, after taking charge of 10 games (4W, 2D, 4L).
Speaking on Joy Sports’ Prime Take, Akonnor revealed player influence was a key challenge for him during his tenure.
“This is public knowledge,” he said when asked about players being imposed on him.
“Many people out there just talk but they have no idea what was happening inside. Apart from Covid, it was a challenge controlling player call-ups.”
The former VfL Wolfsburg midfielder went ahead to bemoan the frustration he had to go through as a result of the influence by some big shots at the FA which almost forced him not to hand call-ups to some players again.
“Having a final say on player selection was always a challenge,” he added.
“There were times I was so frustrated and I didn’t want to call certain players. It got to a point I wasn’t going to call Emmanuel Lomotey again.”
