Ghanaian giants, Accra Hearts of Oak are one of the most illustrious and biggest clubs in the world with the Phobians dominating domestically at least in the past two decades or so.
Good recruitment is a huge part of football as signing the wrong players can be hugely detrimental to a team, as well as an enormous source of embarrassment for years to come.
Here, we have compiled a list of seven terrible signings to don the famous rainbow jersey. In no particular order…
Danjuma Ademola Kuti
Social media became unbearable the day Hearts unveiled Danjuma Ademola Kuti as their new signing.
Kuti was signed by the Phobians in hope of being the trusted forward who could run rings around opponents and bang in the goals.
While the Nigerian had enough good moments at his previous clubs prior to his move to Hearts to make a decent YouTube compilation, he largely failed to adapt to the Ghanaian game, with his fitness and work rate particularly unimpressive. He signed a 2-year-deal with the club but had his contact terminated after a year without featuring for the club competitively.
Abednego Tetteh
Big things were expected from Abednego Tetteh considering that he was familiar with life and football in Ghana after becoming one of the best players in the country during his time at Bechem United.
At Hearts, Tetteh forgot how to play football. He kept getting injured and being generally bad on the pitch, so he was released after the 2021/22 season, having failed to to live up expectations. He made just five appearances.
His form had Kotoko fans feeling as though they had dodged a bullet, but the Porcupine Warriors' bazillion other failed transfers quickly had them crashing back to reality.
Still, Tetteh managed to pick up a Premier League and FA Cup winner's medal before leaving the club. Not a bad little stop in the capital.
Eric Dizan
It was a slow start for Dizan, who claimed to be struggling with both fitness issues and the physicality of the Premier League, and he was soon demoted to the bench. Unfortunately for the Ivorian, he never really recovered.
It was the kind of signing which had the potential to be perfect, but it ended up going catastrophically wrong. Now, Dizan is often referred to as the exact kind of player which Hearts should avoid.
Ushau Abu
The Phobians and Ushau Abu made such a fanfare of his arrival at the club last season, that it was inevitable if he didn’t immediately live up to expectations, there would be murmurings and discontent.
He arrived from Berekum Chelsea as replacement of Benjamin Afutu and despite being younger, and a talent many hoped was big enough to develop and eventually match Afutu. Barring some sparse, isolated flashes of brilliance, it just hasn’t happened for him at Hearts. He has since been shipped to Nsoatreman FC on a season-long loan deal.
He still has plenty of talent, but he'll have to put the hard yards in if he's ever going to fulfil his potential.
Evans Quao
The centre-back had joined the Phobians on a 2-year-deal after seeing out his contract with Hearts' rivals Kotoko. Quao struggled for game time and was eventually sacked with just four games under his belt.
Quao became a by-word for comical defending as the toe-curling errors came thick and fast.
Dominic Eshun
With all the furore surrounding his arrival at Hearts, he failed to replicate the form that triggered the Phobians interest in him. His signing was so interesting for the fans, but the lousy performance and experience ruined it all.
Although there were some sporadic spells and games where he demonstrated his quality, he was wildly inconsistent and never seemed to fit into the team tactically.
Theophilus Jackson
Yeah, you remember this? He had some good qualities as a keeper, but when you do have the shot-stopping deficiencies he very clearly does...the only way to make up for those is physical gifts. He doesn't have those either. Unveiled as Hearts' new signing in March 2018 and sacked in May 2018.
