Bernard Allottey Jacobs, the former Central Regional Chairman of the NDC, has proposed that the Ayew brothers, Andre and Jordan, should contemplate retirement from the national team in light of the sustained criticism following Ghana's exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
In expressing his opinion, Jacobs remarked, "If I were Abedi Pele, I'd tell my children not to play for the Black Stars again," emphasizing the influential nature of words in politics, sports, and religion during an appearance on Peace FM’s morning show.
The Ayew siblings participated in Ghana's campaign in the Ivory Coast, where the team's failure to secure a victory resulted in their elimination from the tournament.
Ghana's exit was sealed with a 2-2 draw against Mozambique in the final group game, squandering a two-goal lead. Jordan Ayew netted both goals from penalty kicks, while Andre Ayew, entering as a substitute, equaled Rigobert Song’s AFCON record for the most games played (36).
Upon their return to Accra on the evening of Wednesday, January 24, 2024, the players were greeted by a modest assembly of fans at the airport.
Despite the suggestion for retirement, Abedi Pele, the Ghanaian football legend, personally welcomed his sons at Kotoka International Airport, demonstrating familial support and resilience after the disappointing AFCON campaign.
