Black Stars captain, Andre Ayew has admitted they had a very disappointing AFCON campaign early this year in Cameroon but added it was also a wake up call for them to identify their lapses.

Ghana had their worse ever AFCON tournament in history after suffering a group stage eviction with only a point, in a group comprising of Morocco, Gabon and Comoros.

The disappointment led to the jettisoning of coach Milovan Rajevac, for Otto Addo to takeover and subsequently led us to the World Cup after edging out sworn rivals Nigeria in the playoffs.

The four time African champions also, have started their 2023 AFCON qualifiers on a higher note having recorded a win and a draw after two matches, and are currently preparing themselves for the 2022 FIFA World Cup which is scheduled for November this year.

Speaking to Graphic Sports, the Al Sadd attacker has stated the disaster in Cameroon got them exposed to their weakness and are gradually working on that.

“Being in the team for a very long time and today being the leader of the squad, looking back at what happened in Cameroun was very difficult for me,” he said.

“But maybe it was supposed to happen due to certain situations, it was supposed to happen to teach us certain things we were not doing. I think it was a wake-up call for the World Cup playoffs which was coming up in March, so we had to be ready."

Andre Ayew and his teammates got thumped on by the Selecão of Brazil in an international friendly last Friday in Le Havre.

They are currently in Spain to face Nicaragua on Tuesday, September 28, 2022.
