Ibrahim Tanko, the head coach of Ghana's Black Meteors, has set his sights on qualifying for the Men's football tournament at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France.
Tanko aims to end Ghana's 20-year absence from the Olympic games, with their last appearance dating back to 2004 in Athens, Greece.
Tanko expressed optimism about the team's chances of securing qualification for the upcoming Olympic Games, highlighting the experience within the squad as a key factor.
"I think it’s a very good experience. We missed out on qualifying for [the Tokyo Olympic Games] Japan with one penalty but when I look at this squad I’m very hopeful that we are going to make it this time,” he stated after the game.
“And when I look at the game today and those who are yet to join us, I think this time we are going to make it.
Taking into account their recent performance and the potential addition of other players to the squad, Tanko believes that the team is well-positioned to achieve their objective.
He emphasized that their primary target is to qualify for the Olympic Games, but winning the tournament would be an added bonus.
Tanko stated, “The target is to qualify to the Olympic Games but there is a cup also to win so we will do our best to win the cup but if by doing so but if we finish second or third and qualify, I think it is all good.
Ghana finds themselves in the same group as host nation Morocco, Guinea, and Congo Brazzaville for the upcoming tournament, which commences on June 24, 2023.
The Black Meteors are determined to showcase their abilities and secure their spot in the prestigious Olympic Games.
