Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan believes the Black Stars' emphatic 5-0 victory over Chad has set the stage for more positive results in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.
Ghana delivered a commanding performance at a packed Accra Sports Stadium on Friday night, securing all three points to climb to the top of Group I. The four-time African champions now lead the standings with 12 points from five matches.
Gyan, Ghana’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals, played a visible role in motivating the team ahead of the game.
The 39-year-old was seen at the Black Stars’ training camp offering words of encouragement, an act that drew praise from many fans.
Speaking after the match, the former striker, who remains Africa’s highest scorer at the FIFA World Cup with six goals, expressed his optimism about Ghana’s qualification prospects.
“This is just the beginning; the most important thing is that we have the three points,” Gyan told GH Hyper.
“Our goal is to qualify for the World Cup. We take it game by game and see what happens. The most important thing is that Ghanaians are happy with the result, and we keep moving forward.”
With this victory, Ghana holds a two-point lead over Madagascar, who sit second with 10 points, while Comoros are third with nine after a 3-0 defeat to Mali, who are now fourth with eight points. Central African Republic occupies fifth place with four points, while Chad remains bottom of the group.
The Black Stars will now turn their focus to a crucial clash against second-placed Madagascar on Monday, March 24. The match will be played in Morocco due to Madagascar’s stadium not meeting FIFA standards.
