Former Ghana Football Association chairman Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has called for a major overhaul of the Black Stars squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, cautioning that several current players lack the quality needed to compete on football’s grandest stage.
Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, ending a run of more than two decades at the tournament. However, the team secured a return to the World Cup after topping their qualifying group with 25 points.
Despite that achievement, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe insists that the squad must undergo serious restructuring if Ghana hopes to advance beyond the group phase at the tournament, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
According to him, many of the players who featured in the qualifiers are not yet ready for World Cup football, and he has urged head coach Otto Addo and his backroom staff to bring in more experienced and higher-calibre options.
“We are going to play at the highest stage of football, and if the country wants to progress, then most of the boys who brought us to where we are today are not good players,” he told Graphic Sports.
“If there are other experienced footballers, we should look for the best that will take us to the World Cup.”
The Black Stars will know their group-stage opponents when the 2026 World Cup draw is held on Friday, November 5.
