It’s been an eventful, intriguing campaign in the Ghanaian Premier League this season. Asante Kotoko were crowned champions, Elmina Sharks, WAFA and Techiman Eleven Wonders were relegated, while RTU and King Faisal edged to safety on the final day. Messers Mbella, Okrah, Annor and Muntari made headlines and gossip columns in the country, while plenty of new names have been added to the football hipster glossary of players to casually throw into conversation down the pub.

Now it’s all over until September, just who were the best of in Ghana’s elite league in 2021/22?

Here is a look at kickgh Ghana Premier League Team of The Season.

GK- Abdulai Iddrisu (Bechem United)

What Iddrisu lacks in charisma, he makes up for insane shot-stopping ability. He displays an at times superhuman ability to pounce the width of the goal, pulling off highlight reel saves on a regular basis. In 31 appearances, he kept 18 clean sheets; conceded 18 goals and won 2 MVP accolades. His efforts helped Bechem United to an impressive third- place finish under Kassim Mingle and were also losing finalists in the MTN FA Cup final.

RB- Augustine Randolf (Karela United)

Randolf has made himself one of the brightest young talents in Ghana with some excellent performances for Karela United. His contribution for his side outlays the evolution of the full-back. Comparisons have been made to Liverpool’s Trent Alexander Arnold due to the similarity in the playing style. Randolf was given the freedom to roam the right flank due to Karela’s three pronged defence offering cover. He did so to devastating effect, regularly joining in on attacking ventures, utilising his blistering pace to burst down the touchline.

CB- Mohammed Alhassan (Hearts)

2021/22 was another season of progress for the best centre-back in the division. Alhassan’s assertive defending and brave line-breaking passing were a big reason for Hearts winning silverware this season. His stellar performances at the heart of the Hearts defence added grit and dynamism to their defensive setup.

CB- Konadu Yiadom (WAFA)

Just because a club is relegated doesn’t mean it lacks prize footballing assets. In fact, the teams stuck in the mire have players who could easily play a part for the very best in the division- some from a starting role, others perhaps in a more rotational role. Konadu Yiadom belongs to the former. It may have been an underwhelming campaign for WAFA but Konadu had a great season. He ended the season as one of the best centre-backs in the league. His 7 MVP accolades aptly corroborate this claim.

LB-Imoro Ibrahim (Kotoko)

The Kotoko left-back was flawless this term. With 9 assists, he ended the season as the player with the most assists. He was key to the Porcupine Warriors’ style of play this season, being effective going forward as he was defending. His runs down the left were vital in getting his team up the pitch to implement their devastating counter-attacking style. Imoro Ibrahim is one of the best dead-ball specialists in the league and that is far from the only thing to like about his game.

DM-Dominic Nsobilla (Accra Lions)

The 19-year-old possesses all the qualities you want in a midfielder in that he can in essence, do it all. His driving runs with the ball are excellent in getting his teammates up the pitch but he is just as brilliant in winning the ball back when his side are out of possession. He will likely be subject to plenty interest in the coming weeks.

CM- Umar Bashiru (Karela United)

Bashiru has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the league in recent years and he played a crucial role for the Anyinase-based side this term. With 14 goals, he was the midfielder with the most goals and placed 3rd on the goal king chart, and his overall game was so effective to how his side played.

CM-Richmond Lamptey (Kotoko)

Eased into the Kotoko team this season but blossomed into an integral part of the team. The former Inter Allies midfielder’s energy, drive and versatility and eye for goal made him a huge asset and major part of Kotoko’s success. The midfielder’s value to Kotoko cannot be overstated. In both directions Lamptey was key to making Kotoko tick.

RW- Yaw Annor (Ashantigold)

Yaw Annor’s reputation has exploded into the stratosphere this season. The tricky forward notched 22 goals to emerge the league’s top scorer and equalled Ishmael Addo’s twenty-two year record. The Ashantigold forward possesses deadly pace and precision finishing ability and was mostly deployed on the wing as well as up top for the Miners. In either role, Annor scored.

ST- Franck Etouga Mbella (Kotoko)

Playing in his first season in the elite league, the Cameroonian forward scored for fun, run defences ragged and proved himself as one of the brightest talents in the division. Arriving from a foreign country and does not speak English or any native language is undoubtedly a daunting experience, as is dealing with the pressure of playing for Kotoko, yet the highest compliment one can give to the Cameroonian is to admit that he instantly belonged in the team. 21 goals in his debut season? Incredible.

LW- Augustine Okrah – (Bechem United)

Okrah played like a man reinvigorated, striking fear into the league’s defences with his devastating pace and close control in transition. He was a joy to watch all season and helped himself to an incredible 14 goals in the league and will be looking to push himself and the Hunters to even greater heights next term as he increasingly takes on a leadership role.
