League football may have come to a halt but there are still some immensely talented footballers (others of dubious quality) still searching for clubs and there is still the possibility that they could get back to the top as was the case seasons ago.
There’s a whole host of high-profile names still unattached, four of which we check out below.
Caleb Amankwah
Arguably, one of the best centre-backs in the league, Caleb Amankwah’s bromance with Accra Hearts of Oak is all but ended. What he is though, is a battering ram of a defender who's about as easy to pass as a Master’s degree in quantum mechanics.
While there are other defenders more well-rounded than him, there are few, if any, as a striker you'd rather not come up against. He oozes an almost arrogant demeanour that suggests 'you will not get the better of me'. Fact is, few ever do.
Amos Acheampong
A former employee of Accra Great Olympics, the midfielder joined Legon Cities at the beginning of last season. He was the Royals’ anchor and used his strength well to stop opponents from going past him.
He is also an excellent distributor of the ball and can be heavily relied on to dictate the tempo of a game. Surely, he’d still be of value to one of the other 17 top-flight clubs.
Listowel Amankona
The forward’s contract with RTU run out few days ago. He’s hardworking, pacey, physical and with a good sense of positioning and blessed with an ability to shoot with either foot. He featured 15 times for the Tamale outfit in the just ended campaign.
It could be that Amankona was a victim of circumstance at RTU, as the club has a far from stable platform for him to grow from. Perhaps a fresh start with a different club will be the right thing for Amankona whose natural talent is not in doubt.
Benjamin Tweneboah
The tricky winger is reported to have seen out his contract with Aduana Stars. For six seasons, he battered defenders and goalkeepers with his pace, dribbling and sublime goals during his days at Elmina Sharks.
Unfortunately, he couldn’t replicate same feat with the Ogya family having joined them in February 2021. He didn’t make a single appearance for Aduana Stars last season, and his dodgy attitude means he’d definitely be a gamble, but if managed correctly he could prove to be a shrewd signing for teams lacking an early season spark. It’s a big if though.
