After ranking the world's best full-backs, centre-backs and defensive midfielders, we are now onto the central midfield position - one of the most crucial roles on the pitch.

There are many different ways to operate in the middle of the park but generally modern-day central midfielders need to possess playmaking, physicality and intelligence to excel.

The role, as stated above is one of the most crucial positions on the football pitch, with matches won and lost according to who comes out on top in the battle in the middle of the park. Central midfielders come in all different shapes and sizes; from the engine rooms to the metronomes, the box to box to the technicians.

A plethora of top-class central midfield talent have graced the Ghanaian Premier League over the years - and the current crop aren't too bad either.

Kickgh.com will attempt to find the ten best central midfielders plying their trade in the ongoing Ghanaian topflight league.

Kwame Adom Frimpong (Aduana Stars)

He is a glorious player who dictates the tempo of matches for the ‘Ogya Family’ and has been one of league's most quietly consistent players for quite some time. Creative, powerful, skilful and dynamic, the Aduana Stars man can pass, shoot, dribble, tackle and cross - and all with either foot.

Frimpong contributes in every phase of the game; he has the technical ability of a luxury player without being anything like a luxury. He’s not especially quick, he’s not that strong, he’s not very big, but he can dominate games like few others.

Sadat Mohammed (RTU)

Sadat Mohammed is RTU’s heartbeat; the player who sets the tempo and makes things tick in the centre of the park. A pass master who rarely gives possession away, the former workaholic midfielder is one of the best distributors in the league, be it over long or short distances.

He’s an extremely clever player too, able to find space in a crowded centre and know exactly when to speed the game up or slow it down.

He plugs holes that no one else sees and gets through an unholy amount of underappreciated legwork for his team. Sadat Mohammed is a born leader, a thoroughly talented operator who inspires a similar level of performance from those around him.

Evans Ampofo (Accra Lions)

Ampofo is a technician. He has the look of a no-nonsense midfielder but plays with the grace of a 2010s Spanish playmaker. His low centre of gravity and lightening quick feet enable him to wriggle through challenges, and he is at his best when receiving the ball from deep and driving forward.

Press him and he'll worm his way past tackle after tackle, sit deep and he'll merrily pick you off with his exquisite passing range.

Technically gifted, tactically astute, strong in the tackle and with an eye for goal, Ampofo gives Ibrahim Tanko the all-round package at the base of his midfield despite his tender age.

Glid Otanga (Hearts)

In terms of natural talent, there were many players better than him on our shortlist. However, his intelligence, work rate and discipline make him irreplaceable in the Hearts midfield.

He's a smart, athletic midfielder with an eye for a pass and seriously have you seen how ripped the man is? Extraordinary transformation aside, the box-to-box midfielder is blessed with superb vision, reading of the game, intelligence and passing ability.

Whether it’s a probing through ball, pinpoint long pass or a sumptuous first touch, Otanga pulls it all off without breaking into a sweat.

Nasiru Moro (Legon Cities)

Players like Nasiru Moro make everything look easy. Whether its a probing through ball, pinpoint long pass or a sumptuous first touch, Moro pulls it all off without breaking into a sweat.

The diminutive midfielder is the fulcrum of the Legon Cities side; the man charged with winning back possession, starting attacking moves and making those all-important fouls whenever necessary. The 26-year old’s snarling performances and tranquility in possession.

Nasiru Moro is a work horse and underrated in terms of what he can do on the ball. He probably still doesn’t get the credit he deserves.

Emmanuel Adjei (Dreams FC)

Emmanuel Adjei has been a metronome for his club, never gives the ball away and is capable of affecting play in any phase. He's super reliable, excellent in and out of possession and his passing is superb.

The 18-year-old is a midfielder who contributes in every phase and is willing to do the dirty work to ensure his teammates shine. That’s his current role at Dreams FC, and he’s performing it superbly.
