Former Ghana Premier League Golden Boot winner Abednego Tetteh has announced his retirement from football while at Heart of Lions, following his strong criticism of the league’s management.
Tetteh recently made headlines after calling for the cancellation of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League (GPL), accusing the Ghana Football Association (GFA) of incompetence. His remarks came after the league was temporarily suspended due to the tragic death of Asante Kotoko fan Francis Yaw Frimpong, also known as ‘Nana Pooley,’ during a Week 19 fixture in Nsoatre. Despite the suspension, the league is set to resume on March 7, with Matchday 23 fixtures confirmed by the GFA.
Announcing his decision on social media, Tetteh wrote: *"Please accept this letter as formal notice of my retirement from Heart of Lions."*
In response, Heart of Lions distanced themselves from his comments about the GPL.
Tetteh made a significant impact in the league, particularly during his time with Bibiani Gold Stars, where he won the GPL Golden Boot with 16 goals in 19 matches. However, his second season with the club was underwhelming, as he managed just nine appearances and a single goal under coach Frimpong Manso.
Before joining Gold Stars, he had a brief stint with Faroe Islands club Hoyvik and played for King Faisal. Tetteh first gained prominence in 2016 with Bechem United, scoring 13 goals and providing five assists in 23 league matches while playing a key role in their FA Cup triumph.
His spell at Hearts of Oak was less successful, making only five appearances before mutually terminating his contract after 15 months.
