Former Asante Kotoko midfielder and ex-Black Stars player Yussif Chibsah has renewed calls for more locally based players to be included in the senior national team, proposing a quota system to ensure players from the Ghana Premier League get fair chances.
Chibsah says the current system does not give enough opportunities to players in the local league. He warns that if this continues, it could affect both the national team and the development of football in Ghana.
“We cannot continue to ignore Ghana Premier League players,” he said. “There must be a quota system to ensure they are represented in the Black Stars.”
He explained that his proposal is not about lowering standards but about creating fair opportunities for home-based players to show their quality.
“It’s about giving them opportunities to prove themselves. If you don’t provide the platform, how can we assess them at the highest level?” he added.
Chibsah also said there should be a clear system that connects the local league to national team selection. He believes this will increase competition and improve football standards in Ghana.
“We need to create a pathway to improve both the players and our local league,” he said.
His comments add to ongoing discussions about balancing foreign-based players with those playing in the local league, as the Black Stars continue to rely heavily on players abroad.
