Former Ghana and Asante Kotoko midfielder Yussif Chibsah has added his voice to the ongoing debate over the inclusion of home-based players in the Black Stars, insisting that a quota system must be introduced.

There has been increasing discussion among pundits and fans in recent weeks, with some pushing for guaranteed spots for Ghana Premier League players, while others argue that selections should be strictly based on merit regardless of where a player is based.

Chibsah, however, believes the current approach is not doing enough to promote local talent, stressing that deliberate measures are needed to ensure domestic players are not overlooked.

“We cannot continue to ignore Ghana Premier League players. There must be a quota system to ensure they are represented in the Black Stars,” he told Citi TV.

“It’s about giving them opportunities to prove themselves. If you don’t provide the platform, how can we assess them at the highest level? We need to create a pathway to improve both the players and our local league,” he added.

The former midfielder’s stance is likely to keep the conversation alive as opinions remain divided on how best to balance merit and development within the national team setup.
