Berekum Chelsea defender Ahmed Adams has raised concern about the low attendance at Ghana Premier League (GPL) sites for the 2023/2024 season.
The large swaths of vacant seats throughout the stadiums provide a dramatic contrast to the boisterous atmosphere expected of Ghana's main football championship. The stands are sparsely populated with die-hard fans.
According to the former Asante Kotoko SC defender, the current economic downturn in the country is the fundamental cause of the low patronage.
“The game is improving, and everything is moving along well. Only a few points separate one club from another on the table, making the league highly competitive,” Adams told TV3.
“However, the attendance at the stadium is a problem due to the economic challenges. With everything being costly lately, people are unable to attend matches. This is undermining the Ghana Premier League.”
Adams further lamented the league’s inability to secure sponsorship, which has compounded the difficulties faced by clubs and players. “The league cannot boast of sponsorship, so it has become difficult for us (clubs and players),” he added.
The Ghana Premier League starts match week 30 this weekend, with FC Samartex leading the table with 52 points from five games to finish the season.
