Asante Kotoko head coach, Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum, has highlighted the scarcity of natural goal scorers and the league's strong defensive setups as key reasons behind the low-scoring matches in the Ghana Premier League.
Dr. Ogum shared this perspective following Kotoko’s 2-0 victory over Bibiani Gold Stars—a result that secured the Porcupine Warriors their fourth consecutive league win.
“Goal scoring has actually been an issue in the league,” Dr. Ogum explained. “Sometimes, if you have people who are natural goal scorers, it’s easier, but unfortunately, we don’t have these natural goal scorers across the teams in the league.”
The coach acknowledged the efforts of Kotoko’s striker, Kwame Opoku, praising his ability but emphasizing that the overall lack of prolific forwards in the league remains a challenge.
In addition to the dearth of strikers, Dr. Ogum pointed out the defensively robust nature of most teams in the league, making it challenging for attackers to find scoring opportunities.
“Most of the teams can defend very well,” he noted. “The solidity and compactness in the defensive structures of all the teams make it very difficult to score. That’s why you often see teams sharing points instead of winning.”
While Kotoko’s recent attacking form has defied this trend, Dr. Ogum’s comments shed light on a broader tactical dynamic in the league, emphasizing the need for enhanced offensive strategies and the development of natural goal scorers.
