Asante Kotoko head coach, Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum, has attributed the low-scoring trend in the Ghana Premier League to its defensive nature and the scarcity of natural goal scorers.
Speaking after Kotoko’s impressive 2-0 victory over Bibiani Gold Stars—marking the Porcupine Warriors’ fourth consecutive league win—Dr. Ogum shed light on the challenges teams face in breaking down defenses and converting chances.
“The league is defensive in nature,” he remarked. “Goal scoring has actually been an issue. Sometimes, if you have players who are natural goal scorers, it’s easier, but unfortunately, we don’t have these natural goal scorers across the teams in the league.”
Dr. Ogum also praised the defensive organization of teams in the league, which he believes makes it challenging for attackers to find the back of the net.
“Most of the teams can defend very well,” he said. “Looking at the solidity and compactness in the defensive structure of all the teams, it becomes very difficult to score. That’s why you often see teams sharing points instead of winning.”
Despite these league-wide challenges, Kotoko’s recent form has been exceptional, with the team managing to break through resolute defenses to secure vital victories. Dr. Ogum’s comments underline the broader tactical dynamics of the league while highlighting areas for improvement, particularly in goal-scoring capabilities.
