Kotoko’s low-key start to the season continued as Bibiani Goldstars ran out 2-1 winners at the Duns Park on Saturday afternoon.
Prince Kwabena Owusu gave the hosts the lead after the interval but had his goal cancelled out by Kotoko’s Sheriff Mohammed before Eric Bosomtwe scored a beauty to win the day for the Michael Osei led side.
Here are three things we learned as Prosper Narteh Ogum suffered his defeat of the season.
Goldstars deserved winners due to dominant performance
It was not much of a surprise that Goldstars took control of the possession in the early exchanges, and the hosts had a couple of good chances inside the first 20 minutes. Alex Aso’s willingness to drift into a central position caused Kotoko all sorts of problems as Appiah McCarthy and Owusu Banahene to pick up the ball.
It could be argued that they deserved to win due to their willingness to commit players forward. It might be too early in the season, but the Miners could contend for the league title.
Ogum has work to do at Kotoko, but a great platform on which to do it
When Ogum arrived at Kotoko for his spell, there wasn’t much hope for the fans, and it should be remembered that he managed to turn it around extremely quickly and led them to a league triumph.
A similar situation seems to present itself this season. In his side’s first two games of the season, it was clear to see across both games; they need more creativity, more unpredictability and more attacking options, otherwise it will be easy for others to contain them as it was for Bibiani Goldstars on Saturday.
However, Ogum is blessed with a pool of talented youngsters to turn things around as the season wears on.
Mfegue continues to misfire
Injuries and a resulting lack of confidence have eroded George Mfegue’s game from last season vis-à-vis his debut season at the club. He endured an afternoon to forget during his side’s 0-0 stalemate with Heart of Lions in Kumasi last week and he was anonymous once at the Duns Park on Saturday.
Ponderous in possession, slow on the turn, and a lack of conviction when given the opportunity to shoot. The Cameroonian forward’s Kotoko career appears to be following a worryingly similar route to that of Evans Adomako, who eventually departed for Karela United FC last season.
