Dan Owusu, a former striker of Bofoakwa Tano has poured out his vexation about the performance of strikers in the Ghana Premier League.
The former Ghana international who won the Ghana Premier League goal king gong for three consecutive times in an interview with Kessben FM, and as quoted by footballghana expound why strikers in the domestic top tier are unable to score more goals for their respective clubs.
“In recent times, the strikers are unable to score goals as expected. A striker scoring twelve (12) goals after thirty four (34) games in the GPL is worrisome and that shows our strikers are indeed very weak.
“Goal scoring is learnt. Anything that you want to do you have to learn and when you do you will surely know. The strikers we have now have no composure when they the get into the 18- yard box because they are always in a hurry to score.
“As a striker, it isn’t necessary to be shooting all the time when you are on a 1v1 with the goalkeeper. You should know when to shoot and when to curl or place the ball. Shooting the ball all the time won’t score. It takes braveness and strong mentality to score goals.
“When I went to Bofoakwa Tano, I faced similar challenges these current strikers are facing, I could get the ball and just shoot and wouldn’t score. I can even dribble defenders and dribble past the goalkeeper and waste the chance. I had to sit and learn how to score goals. I watched videos of German striker Gerd Muller and started emulating what he does on the pitch and listened to the legendary Rev. Osei Kofi and that helped me to be a good striker” Owusu concluded.
With just five games to end the 2023-24 season, the leading topscorer in the Ghanaian top-flight has notched twelve goals.
Berekum Chelsea striker Stephen Amankona and Hamza Issah - who plys his trade for Hearts of Oak have notched twelve goals each, while Asante Kotoko's Steven Mukwala has eleven goals.
