In-form Asante Kotoko striker Albert Amoah has expressed confidence in his abilities, insisting he is not concerned about losing his place in the team despite the return of Kwame Poku to the Porcupine Warriors.
Poku, 27, rejoined Asante Kotoko for a second spell, signing a two-and-a-half-year contract with the Ghana Premier League giants. The forward returns to Kumasi after a challenging three-year stint abroad, where he featured for USM Alger in Algeria and Olympique Khouribga (OCK) in Morocco.
Poku’s move to USM Alger in 2021 followed an impressive tally of six goals in 16 league appearances for Kotoko. However, he struggled to secure a regular starting role in Algeria. His subsequent transfer to OCK was marred by a knee injury that limited his playing time, and he was released after the club's relegation from the Moroccan top flight.
Despite the stiff competition Poku’s arrival brings, Amoah remains optimistic. The former Great Olympics striker, who joined Kotoko during the summer transfer window, has been the club’s standout performer this season, netting seven goals in 13 Ghana Premier League matches.
Amoah’s latest contribution came in the highly anticipated Super Clash against Hearts of Oak, where he scored a stoppage-time winner to secure a dramatic victory for his side. Reflecting on the potential rivalry with Poku, Amoah said:
“I am not afraid of competition. I do not fear his (Kwame Poku) arrival. At the end of the day, it is the team that benefits. If I do not score, he can score. So that is positive for us.”
Poku, a fan favorite during his first spell at Kotoko, will be eager to reignite his career and reclaim his status as a key figure in the squad. However, with Amoah in stellar form, the Porcupine Warriors find themselves in an enviable position of depth in attack.
As Kotoko pushes for league glory, the competition between Amoah and Poku could be pivotal in maintaining the team’s momentum in the title race.
