Former Asante Kotoko head coach Abdul Karim Zito has revealed that the club made efforts to persuade him to remain in charge, but he had already taken a firm decision to step down.

Zito officially resigned on Monday, just 24 hours after Kotoko’s FA Cup exit, where the Porcupine Warriors were eliminated by Aduana FC following a 4–2 penalty shootout defeat at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in the Round of 16.

Speaking on Asempa FM, the former Black Satellites coach explained that his resignation followed deep discussions with people close to him, describing the situation as a personal and family matter.

“It became a family issue, and we had to talk it out and find an amicable solution. In the end, we all agreed that I should leave,” Zito stated.

Zito acknowledged that Kotoko officials attempted to convince him to reconsider his decision, but he stressed that he remained resolute throughout the process.

“They did their best to change my mind, but my mind was already made up. I am a legend of the club, and when issues arise, you must stay calm and resolve them through dialogue. I have resigned,” he added.

Despite spending less than a year at the club, Zito expressed pride in what he achieved during his tenure, pointing to the silverware he delivered.

“I have been on the job for barely a year, and I won four trophies. I am very happy about it,” he said.

Zito was appointed head coach in April last year and capped his stint by leading Kotoko to FA Cup glory at the end of the season.

Following his departure, Asante Kotoko have confirmed that assistant coaches Prince Osei Yaw and Hamza Obeng will take charge of the team for Sunday’s Super Clash against Hearts of Oak.
