Basake Holy Stars head coach Johnson Smith says complacency crept into his team during their 2–0 loss to Dreams FC.

The defeat on Sunday brought an end to the club’s impressive five-match unbeaten run.

Speaking after the game, Smith suggested his players lost focus on the back of their recent superb form and admitted the shift in attitude ultimately worked against them.

“Ghanaian footballers, when they are winning matches, they allow their head to become swollen and that’s what’s killing them,” he lamented.

The former Medeama and Kotoko coach also raised tactical concerns, stressing that the Big HOLY failed to maintain the same energy displayed in previous games.

“Our transition play was very slow if I compare it to our last five matches,” he said. “Some of our players are also on two yellow cards and didn’t want to get so much involved to get another yellow card.”

The defeat is Smith’s first since taking charge of Holy Stars, and he confirmed plans are underway to strengthen key areas of the team ahead of the second round of the Ghana Premier League campaign.

“I want to strengthen the goalkeeping side, the central, and the striking department. If I don’t get too, I will maintain and work with the players we have,” he added.
