Asante Kotoko say they were not surprised by the decision of head coach Karim Zito to resign after the club’s FA Cup exit.

Zito stepped down on Monday, a day after Kotoko lost 4–2 on penalties to Aduana FC at the Baba Yara Stadium in the Round of 16 of the FA Cup. Following his departure, the club appointed Prince Yaw Owusu as interim coach.

Speaking to Luv FM, Kotoko’s Communication Director, Sarfo Duku, said the coach’s decision did not come as a shock.

“We were not surprised, because we knew that the coach wasn't happy with the performance of his team, and so it didn't come to us as a surprise at all,” he said.

Duku also dismissed assertions that the club had planned to sack Zito.

“No, we had no plan to do that,” he stated.

He explained that the club was still assessing events surrounding the team.

“We were to receive the details of what transpired in the course of the match. And then, of course, we have asked the necessary questions,” he added.

Kotoko’s defeat to Aduana continued a poor run of form, with the club winning just one of their last five matches in all competitions.

Kotoko will now turn their attention to Sunday’s Super Clash against sworn rivals Hearts of Oak at the Baba Yara Stadium in Matchday 22 of the Ghana Premier League.
