Nations FC defender Christopher Nettey has shed light on the struggles faced by locally based players in Ghana, revealing the harsh realities of their careers and the financial difficulties they endure.

Speaking on Akoma 87.9 FM, Nettey admitted that many players in the Ghana Premier League struggle to make ends meet, often seeking opportunities abroad to secure better financial stability.

“We (players) are really suffering, but that is the situation we have found ourselves in. It is up to us to do our best, secure a foreign deal, and move on,” Nettey stated.

Reflecting on his time at Asante Kotoko, the right-back recalled instances where fellow players reached out to him for financial help, even before matches.

“This is not a secret. When I was at Kotoko, I recall meeting players who would say, ‘We are here, but there is nothing happening, so if you can sort us out.’ Even before games, they would text me, ‘Man, when you’re coming, prepare yourself and come give me something.’ This person is a Premier League player.”

Nettey further expressed understanding for players who leave the local league for opportunities in less prestigious leagues abroad, citing the economic hardships they face at home.

“I do not blame local players for traveling to those areas. Truly, we are suffering.”

His comments highlight ongoing concerns about player welfare in the Ghana Premier League, with many calling for improved salaries and better conditions to prevent the continuous exodus of talent from the local scene.
