Former Asante Kotoko midfielder Michael Akuffo has thrown his support behind coach Karim Zito, insisting he is the right man to lead the Porcupine Warriors despite their underwhelming performance in the just-ended GHALCA Top 4 tournament.
Kotoko endured a disappointing campaign in the pre-season competition, finishing bottom of the four-team table without registering a single win. The poor showing has raised concerns among fans ahead of the new season, where the Reds will also represent Ghana in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Zito, who replaced Prosper Narteh Ogum in April, guided Kotoko to FA Cup glory and followed it up with two post-season trophies — the President’s Cup and the Toyota Cup.
Speaking to Radio Gold, Akuffo expressed confidence in Zito’s ability to transform the team:
“It’s a big plus for the team when you look at what Karim Zito did with Dreams FC in the CAF Confederation Cup. So when his name was mentioned for Kotoko, I didn’t see anything wrong because I’ve known him since childhood. Giving the job to him will help transition Kotoko into something different. Last season was very difficult, but when he came, he changed certain dynamics, and at the end of the day, the team won laurels.”
Kotoko will look to bounce back from their Top 4 disappointment when they face Bibiani GoldStars in the Champion of Champions Cup on Sunday, August 31, to officially kick off the new campaign.
