Nana Sarfo Oduro, an Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has revealed that Chinese-owned pay-TV operator StarTimes is close to finalizing a deal to return as the official broadcaster of the Ghana Premier League.
StarTimes previously held the broadcasting rights for the league but ceased airing games due to an outstanding debt of nearly $1 million. However, in an interview with Asempa FM, Sarfo Oduro disclosed that negotiations with the pay-TV giant are now nearing completion.
“We are almost closing up with StarTimes, and it is likely they will return in the second round to broadcast our games,” Sarfo Oduro said.
The anticipated return of StarTimes is expected to improve the league's media presence and provide better access for fans around the world. The broadcaster is also expected to air FA Cup matches, further boosting the visibility of domestic football.
The switch to free-to-air broadcasters earlier in the season faced criticism for the poor quality of broadcast, and StarTimes' return is seen as a step towards enhancing the viewing experience for fans.
