The 2022/23 Ghana Premier League has thus far been one filled with unexpected results and a gargantuan supply of goals, and within that some teams and players have flourished, whereas others have struggled to maintain their usual standards.
So, with nearly a fifth of the 2022/23 Premier League campaign gone already, which players have shown the biggest improvement from last term?
Abednego Tetteh (Bibiani Goldstars)
After being considered as surplus to Hearts’ requirements, Tetteh was released by the Phobians at the end of the of the 2021/22 season. The 32-year-old then joined King Faisal FC but was again released by the Kumasi club in the second transfer window, albeit scoring a couple of goals for the club. Bibiani Goldstars afforded him the opportunity and it has since been a shrewd business for the Miners.
Abednego Tetteh has proven indispensable to Michael Osei since his arrival. He has scored 8 goals for Goldstars but has 10 in the league.
Francis Andy Kumi (Kotoku Royals)
It’s amazing what the right move can do for a player and while Francis Andy Kumi was by no means a disappointment in a Kotoko shirt, getting regular game-time at Kotoku Royals has reminded everybody of the level of talent in his locker.
He has netted nine times since he joined the Royals in the second window. It’s still early days but he looks like a good fit at Kotoku Royals and the 23-year-old might just fancy his chances of forcing his way back into the plans of the big clubs.
Caleb Amankwah (Hearts of Oak)
Caleb Amankwah has had underwhelming campaigns at Hearts since he joined the club, in admittedly difficult circumstances, but the club are getting their money’s worth this time around. Forced to play out of position in midfield all too often.
The 25-year-old is now flourishing in his favourite role at the heart of hearts’ backline. Ultimately that still remains to be seen but having enjoyed a proper start to the season this time around, the former Aduana man looks to be making up for lost time.
As a centre-back, he has scored 2 goals in 16 appearances for the Phobians.
Yaw Amankwah Baafi (Hearts of Oak)
Yaw Amankwah Baafi is another player whose adaptability has been a real asset for his club this season. He has performed admirably, whether at a wing-back or further forward. Having played a bit-part role for Hearts last season, the 19-year-old has now become a mainstay in the Hearts setup. Baafi has more than convinced the Hearts hierarchy that he deserves to be playing for the club.
What has been more impressive is that he has improved his workrate by leaps and bounds, while improving on his key passes and pass accuracy percentage.
Kwame Adom Frimpong (Aduana Stars)
Kwame Adom Frimpong may not get the headlines but he has played a vital role alongside Douglas Owusu Ansah in the Aduana midfield. Its Frimpong’s tactical flexibility that has been most impressive of late. He has excelled in a deeper role, with his tackles and interceptions per 90 minutes more than doubling this season. He is also creating more chances for teammates.
Frimpong can be considered to be one of the most underrated players in the league and he has this season shown why he must be considered as one of the best midfielders as seen by his performances so far.
Issah Kuka (RTU)
A player who has surpassed all expectations this season has been Issah Kuka. The on-loan Hearts forward is having a brilliant campaign, scoring seven goals, recording one assist in his fist fifteen league games for RTU.
In addition to his goals, he has also improved on his hold-up play and completion rate when it comes to passing.
