Being a professional footballer is not easy and it never was. The pressure of performing week in week out can take toll on the best in the business and result in dry spells of poor form, which ultimately results in having a barren spell and getting stuck in a rut.

If you are a new recruit and you don't do the Franck Mbella Etouga thing and score 21 goals in 28 games , you are – as they say – in the mud.

Of course, that's a big ol' crock of silliness. Not everything worth having comes quickly, famously – and there are a few big name/big money signings who didn't hit the ground running.

Here are five of these players who could bounce back next season.

Stephen Amankona ( Kotoko)

Stephen Amankona had excelled for Berekum Chelsea for seasons and looked destined to become one of the country's best wingers. So, as players in his situation usually do, he moved to Asante Kotoko SC.

Unfortunately, his patient, methodical style of play did not translate to the club. He wanted time on the ball but was given none of it, and ended up looking more like a chump than a champ.

Inexplicably, there were occasional flashes of brilliance which suggests he could bounce back next season and become the player Kotoko wants him to be.

Abu Ushau ( Hearts)

During his time with Berekum Chelsea, Abu Ushau blossomed into one of the most exciting midfielders in Ghana's elite league convincing all of his readiness for the next step.

It was the Phobians who took the plunge and lured Ushau to Accra, but things quickly fell apart. He has failed to impress in his brief cameos, never looked worthy of starting games and made Hearts worse when he was on the pitch. It hasn't been good thus far.

Undoubtedly, he has the talent and potential to bounce back next season.

Gladson Awako ( Hearts)

When you join Hearts from rivals Accra Great Olympics, you're supposed to actually be good at football, but clearly nobody told Gladson Awako.

Off-field issues clearly didn't help, but there's no denying that Awako has been nowhere near good enough.

Possessing incredible finesse and grace on the pitch with every backheel, step-over, flick and leap to maintain control of the ball, Awako has a lot in his tank to unleash to the Hearts faithful next season.

Samuel Appiah ( Kotoko)

One player who can feel hard done by not commanding a starting berth at Kotoko is full back Samuel Appiah.

It is only the exceptional form of Augustine Agyapong and Christopher Nettey that has kept the former Medeama man from being recognised as one of the best right-backs in the league as was the case before his move to Kotoko.

It has been a learning curve for the talented defender and that could prove to be vital for his resurrection next season.

George Asamoah ( Accra Great Olympics)

The Great Olympics midfielder emerged as one of the most exciting young talents in Ghanaian football during his days at Ebusua Dwarfs. His technical ability coupled with an impressive work-rate saw him become one of the most sought out players in the division.

Amid claims that he is being used out of position, Asamoah has blown hot and cold at Olympics. He is by no means hugely talented, but it's fair to say that almost everyone expected more from George Asamoah.
