Accra Lions defender Baba Salifu Apiiga has accused referee James Taylor of unfairly influencing the outcome of their match against Asante Kotoko, which ended in a 1-0 defeat for the Lions in the Ghana Premier League.
The Lions, who finished second last season, faced off against the Porcupine Warriors at the Obuasi Len Clay Sports Stadium on Sunday. A lone goal from striker Albert Amoah secured maximum points for the record league holders in this matchday five encounter.
After the game, the 17-year-old left-back expressed his frustration, insisting that the team performed well despite the loss. “I don’t see it as a defeat because we played very well against Kotoko. Again, I don’t understand why the referee disallowed our goal against them,” he stated.
When asked if he believed the referee determined the match's outcome, Apiiga firmly replied, “Yes! That’s how I see it.”
He further lamented the unfairness of the situation, saying, “It’s painful to play and lose unfairly like this. The referee cheated us and made Kotoko carry the day.”
Currently, Accra Lions are struggling to find their rhythm this season, with three losses, one draw, and only one win from five matches. They are currently positioned 14th on the league table and will host Berekum Chelsea at the University of Ghana Stadium for their matchday six clash.
