Former Black Stars assistant coach George Boateng has been confirmed as the new head coach of Belgian third-tier club RAEC Mons, putting pen to paper on a three-year contract to replace outgoing manager Emilio Ferrera.

The 49-year-old, who holds a UEFA Pro License, had been out of work since leaving Coventry City in November 2024 following the appointment of Frank Lampard. His move to Mons marks his return to frontline management after several years of assistant and developmental roles.

Boateng boasts a rich coaching background, including his time as part of the Ghana national team’s technical staff. He served as assistant coach at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast. However, following Ghana’s disappointing AFCON campaign, the Ghana Football Association dissolved the entire technical setup, ending his tenure.

A former midfielder, Boateng retired from professional football in 2013 after an impressive career in England, where he represented Coventry City, Aston Villa, Middlesbrough, Hull City, and Nottingham Forest.

His coaching résumé features spells as head coach of Malaysian side Kelantan, as well as serving as Aston Villa U-23 head coach, where he was widely credited with helping nurture young talent.

Now stepping into the dugout at RAEC Mons, Boateng will be tasked with building a competitive side capable of pushing for promotion, while bringing his wealth of international and European experience to the Belgian game.
