The International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) has officially released its 2025 rankings of Africa’s strongest domestic football leagues, offering a clear snapshot of the continent’s competitive landscape.
At the summit of the rankings is Egypt’s Nile League, which has been crowned Africa’s strongest league for 2025. The Egyptian top flight continues to benefit from the continental dominance of clubs such as Al Ahly and Zamalek, whose consistent performances in CAF competitions have reinforced the league’s standing.
Closely behind in second place is Morocco’s Botola Pro, a league that has enjoyed remarkable growth in recent years. Moroccan clubs like Wydad Casablanca and Raja Casablanca have been regular contenders in continental tournaments, underlining the league’s tactical quality and depth.
Completing the podium is South Africa’s Betway Premiership, ranked third. Known for its strong commercial backing, modern infrastructure, and competitive balance, the South African league remains one of the most attractive and professionally run competitions on the continent.
Algeria’s Ligue Professionnelle 1 and Tunisia’s Ligue Professionnelle 1 take fourth and fifth positions respectively, highlighting the continued dominance of North African football, which accounts for four of the top five leagues.
East and Central Africa are also well represented, with Tanzania’s NBC Premier League ranking sixth and DR Congo’s Linafoot Ligue 1 placed seventh, reflecting their growing influence and improving standards. Mali’s Ligue 1 Orange, Angola’s Girabola, and Ivory Coast’s Ligue 1 Lonaci round off the top ten.
