Burkina Faso’s President Ibrahim Traoré has ignited a continent-wide debate after launching a scathing attack on Morocco’s hosting of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, accusing the North African nation of discriminatory conduct toward other African teams and supporters.

Speaking in reaction to incidents that occurred during the tournament, Traoré described what happened in Morocco as “a disgrace,” alleging that several teams were subjected to hostility and racist abuse. Among the most troubling claims referenced by the Burkinabè leader were reports of players being pelted with bananas from the stands, an act widely condemned in world football and associated with racial discrimination.

Traoré’s comments went beyond criticism of isolated incidents, as he openly questioned the relationship between North Africa and the rest of the continent within African football. He argued that while some North African countries often distance themselves culturally and politically from sub-Saharan Africa, they continue to take part in CAF competitions.

“It may be time to cut off North Africa and play our own AFCON,” Traoré suggested, calling for serious reflection on how African football can better protect the dignity, safety, and equality of all participants.
