Ghanaian football legend Osei Kofi has received a special invitation from former Leganés FC owners, Victoria Pavón and Felipe Moreno, to be honored in Spain with a friendly match between their new club and Real Madrid.
The recognition comes in appreciation of Osei Kofi’s role in the historic 1962 match between the Black Stars and Real Madrid at the Accra Sports Stadium, which ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw.
During their visit to Ghana in 2021 to establish a football academy, Pavón and Moreno learned about the legendary encounter and later confirmed its details from Real Madrid’s archives before reaching out to Osei Kofi.
“In 1962, the Black Stars played a thrilling 3-3 draw against Real Madrid. Before the match, we were promised a grand party if we managed to avoid conceding 10 goals. Legends like Ferenc Puskás and Alfredo Di Stéfano were on the pitch that day,” Osei Kofi recalled before departing for Spain.
“When I was subbed in during the second half with the score at 2-2, I dribbled past my marker and lofted a pass to Edward Acquah, who finished brilliantly to put us 3-2 ahead,” he added.
Osei Kofi also shared how Leganés officials decided to honor him after verifying his role in the iconic game.
“About four years ago, some officials from Leganés visited Ghana. I took them to the Accra Sports Stadium and told them the story of our match against Real Madrid at that very venue. At first, they didn’t believe me, but when they looked it up, they confirmed everything. They even sent me a letter to apologize. After several discussions, they’ve now decided to honor me with a special match.”
The friendly game will serve as a tribute to Osei Kofi’s outstanding football legacy and his contribution to Ghanaian football history.
