Asante Kotoko are back in Morocco for another continental test, this time against Wydad Athletic Club in the CAF Confederation Cup second-round tie — and history is not on their side.
The Porcupine Warriors have made six previous trips to Morocco in African inter-club competitions, recording three draws and three defeats. Despite some spirited performances over the years, the Kumasi giants have never managed a victory on Moroccan soil.
Here’s a look at Kotoko’s record in Morocco across various tournaments and decades:
-
1987 – African Cup of Champions Clubs (now CAF Champions League)
Wydad Athletic Club 1–1 Asante Kotoko -
1990 – CAF Champions League
FAR Rabat 3–3 Asante Kotoko -
1993 – CAF Cup Winners’ Cup
Kawkab Marrakech 1–0 Asante Kotoko -
2002 – CAF Cup Winners’ Cup
Wydad Athletic Club 1–0 Asante Kotoko -
2004 – CAF Confederation Cup
Wydad Athletic Club 1–1 Asante Kotoko -
2009 – CAF Confederation Cup
Ittihad Khemisset 2–0 Asante Kotoko
In total, Kotoko have scored six goals and conceded nine in Morocco — statistics that reflect how closely contested many of these encounters have been, yet how elusive victory remains.
Among their standout performances were the thrilling 3-3 draw against FAR Rabat in 1990 and their hard-fought stalemates with Wydad in 1987 and 2004 — matches that still resonate with fans decades later.
Now, under the guidance of Karim Zito, Kotoko return to face familiar foes Wydad AC, hoping to finally break their Moroccan hoodoo and write a new chapter in their continental journey.
