Kwesi Appiah Highlights Football’s Role in Uniting Conflict-Torn Sudan
Sudan head coach Kwesi Appiah has emphasized the transformative power of football to inspire and unite, even amidst the turmoil of a 20-month civil war.
The Ghanaian tactician has seen firsthand how the beautiful game has offered a glimmer of hope to a nation deeply affected by conflict.
Under his leadership, Sudan achieved a significant milestone by qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), providing a rare moment of national joy during challenging times.
“Football is one of the keys that can unlock such wars,” Appiah remarked. “This is something the players can do to help change—or even stop—the war in Sudan by qualifying for the AFCON or the World Cup.”
The road to qualification has been emotionally charged, with players grappling with personal tragedies caused by the ongoing war.
“Four players lost close family members while in camp,” Appiah revealed. “It’s a really sad situation, but they try to cope. The team has become a family, offering comfort and encouragement to one another. It hasn’t been easy.”
Sudan’s AFCON qualification sparked widespread celebrations, a testament to the unifying power of football. Appiah recounted how jubilation erupted across the war-torn nation.
“After we secured qualification, we visited the Sudanese embassy. The ambassador told us people had laid down their guns and were dancing in the streets. That’s not normal because, usually, everyone is watching for danger,” he said.
With Sudan now in a strong position in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying group, the team remains determined to bring further pride and unity to their homeland, driven by the belief that football can serve as a powerful catalyst for hope and healing.
