Some of Ghana’s most prominent former footballers have backed Kaizer Chiefs’ Toyota Cup initiative, praising the South African club’s efforts to deepen inter-club ties across the continent ahead of their upcoming clash with Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko.
The exhibition match, set for July 26, has been billed as more than a football fixture, with both clubs hoping it can spark broader collaboration between African teams. The initiative was lauded during a recent engagement event in Accra featuring Chiefs’ ambassadors Siyabonga Nomvethe and Stanton Fredericks, alongside several Ghanaian football legends.
“This is more than a match. It’s a movement,” said Anthony Baffoe, General Secretary of the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana and a former Black Stars defender. “The Toyota Cup presents a unique opportunity for African clubs to build strategic relationships and elevate the standard of football on the continent.”
Baffoe, who attended the event with fellow ex-internationals such as Sammy Kuffour, Laryea Kingson, Maxwell Konadu and the likes, and PFAG representatives, described the collaboration between Kaizer Chiefs and Asante Kotoko as a significant step forward for African football.
“When two giants like Kaizer Chiefs and Asante Kotoko come together in this way, it sends a powerful message,” he said. “We salute Kaizer Chiefs for taking this bold step and look forward to the ripple effects it may have across Africa.”
The match will take place at the Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban, South Africa, and will feature a range of fan engagement activities, aimed at celebrating African football heritage and promoting unity between clubs from different regions.
Kaizer Chiefs, one of South Africa’s most decorated sides, have highlighted the Toyota Cup as part of their broader strategy to strengthen cross-border ties and foster grassroots development across the continent.
