South African senior national team, Bafana Bafana leading topscorer, Benny McCarthy has stated that the growing financial muscle of the PSL, also known as the Betway Premiership for sponsorship reasons is making South African club's to begin to make great impact in CAF competitions.
South Africa’s league also has the highest prize money in Africa with this season’s PSL winners set to pocket R20 million ($1,094,141.82 ), which is one million ninety-four thousand one hundred forty-one us dollars 82 cents, an increase from the R15 million ($821,684.04) that was being paid out before the new lucrative deal with betting firm Betway.
PSL clubs have achieved significant success in continental football this season with Mamelodi Sundowns reaching the CAF Champions League final, while Orlando Pirates progressed to the semi-final as Stellenbosch made the quarter-finals of the Confederation Cup for the first time in their history.
“The league is really on a high and because of that, teams have stability, they are stable, and financially sought after so everything is falling really nicely for South African football and that is why you see the success in CAF competitions,” McCarthy, who is now the Kenya national team coach stated.
“For South Africa, I am finally very happy that my country is settled and they are reaching the heights where they are supposed to.”
The PSL is now attracting players from not just Africa but European and South American teams with top sides like Kaizer Chiefs, Sundowns and Pirates dolling out massive wages.
