Black Satellites defender Aaron Essel says Ghana is treating Sunday’s U-20 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final against host nation Egypt as a do-or-die encounter, likening it to a final.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference at the New Suez Stadium, the central defender described the team’s mindset as focused and composed ahead of the high-stakes showdown.
“For us, this is a final,” Essel declared. “The pitch will decide the better team, and we are determined to make sure it’s Ghana. Everyone is calm, focused, and ready to give their all.”
The 2025 U-20 AFCON not only serves as a continental title chase but also as a pathway to the FIFA U-20 World Cup, with all four semifinalists earning automatic qualification. That added incentive means a win on Sunday will secure Ghana a return to the global stage.
Essel emphasized the importance of executing head coach Desmond Ofei’s tactical plan, particularly against an Egyptian side that will have the advantage of home support.
“There’s no pressure on us,” he noted. “We’ve worked hard in training and we’re going into this match with the right mentality and belief.”
A four-time winner of the U-20 AFCON, Ghana is seeking to restore its dominance at this level. Victory over Egypt in Suez would move the Black Satellites one step closer to another continental crown and secure a coveted spot at the U-20 World Cup.
