Newly appointed Black Queens head coach, Kim Björkegren, has pledged to improve Ghana’s standing in FIFA’s global rankings as he takes charge of the women’s senior national team.

The Swedish tactician made this commitment during his official unveiling on Friday, February 14, 2025.

He replaces Nora Häuptle, who left to coach Zambia after her contract expired, signing a two-year deal with the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

Addressing the media, the 43-year-old emphasized his desire to elevate the team's FIFA ranking, currently at 66th place.

“I know there has been a lot of good work done in the past couple of years. I’m aware of the Volta Project, and that’s something we will continue to work on to change the momentum and keep moving in the right direction,” Björkegren stated.

“When it comes to the FIFA ranking, 66th is too low for a team of Ghana’s quality. With the talent we already have, we should be in a much better position. In the long term, I’m confident we will get there.”

Bjorkegren’s appointment comes at a crucial time as Ghana aims to reclaim its status as a powerhouse in women’s football.

His first test will be a friendly against Morocco, part of the team’s preparations for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) later this year.
