Zambia and Orlando Pride forward Barbra Banda has been named the BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year, securing the majority of votes from BBC Sport readers after an impressive year of achievements.
The 24-year-old topped the shortlist of five nominees, which was unveiled last month. The list, based on performances from September 2023 to August 2024, was compiled by a panel of global football experts, including coaches, players, and journalists.
Reacting to the honor, a visibly emotional Banda expressed her gratitude:
“I am shocked and surprised to have this award right by my side. I would like to thank the people who voted and everyone who has played a part in my life and career – my family, my national team in Zambia, and especially the Pride team. This is for everyone.”
Banda had a historic year, shining on both international and club stages. She scored four goals for Zambia at the Paris Olympics, including a stunning first-half hat-trick against Australia. With a total of 10 Olympic goals, Banda now holds the record as Africa's leading scorer in the competition’s history.
In the 2024 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), Banda proved equally unstoppable, netting 13 goals in the regular season despite joining Orlando Pride in March. She added four more goals in the playoffs, including the decisive strike in the championship final that secured Orlando Pride their first-ever league title. Her remarkable performances earned her the NWSL Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.
Spain and Barcelona star Aitana Bonmatí, who enjoyed a stellar year with her club and country, finished second in the BBC voting. USA and Portland Thorns forward Sophia Smith came in third, rounding out the podium.
