Dutch-born Ghanaian defender Derek Emmanuel Adjei Agyakwa has completed a transfer to Greek Super League outfit Volos FC, marking the latest chapter in his steadily rising European career.
The 24-year-old centre-back arrives in Greece after an impressive period in Georgia, where he established himself as a key figure for Iberia 1999 during a highly successful spell.
Agyakwa’s football journey began in the Netherlands with FC Twente’s academy before he moved to England in January 2020 to sign for Premier League side Watford. He made his senior debut later that year in an EFL Cup victory over Oxford United, announcing his arrival at professional level.
Seeking regular game time and experience, the defender later enjoyed a loan spell in Italy with Como, before continuing his development in England with Port Vale and a short-term loan at Chorley, where he gained valuable first-team exposure.
His career gained fresh momentum in February 2024 when he joined Iberia 1999, a move that proved transformative. In Georgia, Agyakwa flourished, helping the club secure back-to-back Erovnuli Liga titles in 2024 and 2025. Across all competitions, he made 72 appearances and crowned his time at the club by scoring in the 2025 Georgian Cup final, underlining his growing influence and confidence.
Now at Volos FC, Agyakwa steps into a new challenge in one of Europe’s more competitive top-flight leagues. The versatile defender is expected to add depth, experience, and leadership as Volos look to strengthen their squad and push forward in the Greek Super League.
