Olympique Lyon manager Paulo Fonseca has raised concerns over the fitness of Ghana international Ernest Nuamah ahead of their upcoming French Ligue 1 fixture against Angers, casting doubt on the winger’s immediate return to action.
Nuamah has been sidelined for nearly a year after suffering a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury during a league match against Lille OSC, an injury that ruled him out of Ghana’s remaining 2026 World Cup qualifiers and the entire 2025/26 season so far.
Although the former FC Nordsjælland winger has recently resumed training, Fonseca believes the player is not yet mentally ready for competitive football.
“Ernest Nuamah is a player who still lacks confidence due to his long injury,” the Portuguese coach said ahead of the Angers clash.
Fonseca also admitted that Nuamah’s absence has been a significant setback for the team, highlighting the importance of squad depth and competition.
“Teams are stronger when there is competition in every position. When I see Ernest on the field, I think he is the kind of player who can make the difference, and his absence is felt,” he added.
While a return against Angers appears unlikely, there is optimism that Nuamah could make his comeback in Lyon’s next fixture against Lorient.
His potential return would also be a major boost for Ghana as the Black Stars continue preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
