Chengdu Rongcheng have been fined US$70,000 and ordered to close part of their stadium for one match after supporters racially abused Ghana international Frank Acheampong.

The punishment was confirmed by the Chinese Professional Football League on Saturday following a review of the incident.

Police in Chengdu said two men were arrested shortly after the match and placed in administrative detention, which can last up to 20 days. Both individuals have also been banned from entering any football venue for 12 months.

According to the state-owned Global Times, supporters directed “derogatory insults” and “racially charged behaviour” at Acheampong in the 31 October away match which was the second-to-last game of the season.

The footage of the incident which has been circulated widely on social media, showed supporters making “monkey noises” aimed at his skin tone and flashing multiple vulgar hand signals.

Under Chinese FA regulations, clubs can be sanctioned for any racist, discriminatory or derogatory behaviour by their supporters.

Acheampong, 32, plays for Henan FC and has notched 14 goals in 30 Chinese Super League matches this season.
